Chapter 9

Nervous squeals erupted as my eyes adjusted to the lack of light.

Professor Shaw whipped out her cell and cursed. “No signal,” she grumbled. She shoved the phone back into her bodice and pulled out a flashlight, checking Devon’s pupils.

“You carry flashlights around, Professor?” I asked and wondered how many other things were hidden within her garment.

She ignored my question and took a firm grip on Devon’s hands, gesturing for Taylor to get his feet.

“Help me get Devon up,” she said, slightly winded. The tight bodice undoubtedly left little room to breathe, let alone carry a young adult man. “We’ll move him to the study.”

“And then what?” I asked but got cut off from a reply.

“The entire block is out,” CeeCee announced. “I checked through the parlor blinds.” Her voice, although brusque with annoyance, didn’t sound alarmed. So far, no one had guessed that someone had actually attacked Devon.

Both Taylor and I studied the professor’s strained face. She’d heaved Devon’s upper body a few inches off the floor and paused.

“Then we find the assailant,” she said under her breath to me.

“Why don’t we leave?” I whispered.

“We can’t.”

“Why not? Break a window,” I replied.

“They’re bullet proof, and don’t even think about breaking down the doors because they’re designed to prevent intruders. Tough as nails. With no land line, no WiFi, and no way out, I’m afraid we’re trapped until the power comes back on.”

I stared in disbelief. “Why in heavens name would you do that?”

“When you work in law enforcement, you live prepared. Less talk and more action. We’ve got to move Devon and keep his condition under wraps. No sense in panicking people.”

In the meantime, CeeCee had made herself useful and found a cot somewhere in the kitchen pantry, which would prevent Devon from injuring himself further.

Professor Shaw thanked CeeCee, which brought a smile to her face.

“Taylor, um… Mr. Pepper.” Professor Shaw blew a fallen strand of hair out of her eyes. “Keep your grip tight. We don’t want him moving too much. Nice and easy, alright? One, two, three…”

The professor grunted, straining against Devon’s weight. While not a heavy guy, he was still a full-grown man. By the looks of him, he probably weighed close to 225 pounds. Last I’d heard, Devon rowed for the university on scholarship, and he’d won many a race. Which left me thinking… what on earth could have walloped him so hard as to knock him out?

Devon was laid on the cot, his hands resting on his ribcage. Professor Shaw pivoted, her backside facing the cot, and in unison with Taylor, they picked it up. As they shuffled out, the rest of us trotted after them to the study, where Carson sat wide awake on the sofa beside a doting Clara. Jaw flexed and staring straight ahead, he endured her constant affections, touching his face, a flutter of kisses on his cheek, but the second he caught sight of Devon, Carson jumped to his feet. Clara, annoyed from the interruption, followed suit, placing a staying hand on his arm.
